When news of the pandemic first became to circulate, the most commonly used predictors of hospitalization from COVID-19 infection was advanced age and underlying health conditions. More recently we became aware of viral load, or exposure to a higher dose of virus particles, as another factor influencing level of infection and immune response especially in healthcare workers. Now there is also evidence that certain variants of a gene in the general population could affect risk of a severe infection.
